Glenridding

What is slightly puzzling is where Glenridding tends to race. The horse has lined up seven times in Class 5 company — essentially the lower rungs of British racing — and has not won once from those outings. Yet step up to a slightly longer trip, somewhere between a mile and a furlong and a mile and two furlongs, and the numbers look considerably more promising: 1 win from just 4 races at those distances, which works out at 25%, or roughly 1 in every 4. That is a meaningful difference, and it suggests there may be more to this horse when conditions suit.

The trainer is Ewan Whillans, who operates from Hawick in the Scottish Borders — not a postcode you typically associate with a busy racing yard, but the team has sent out 28 winners this season, which is a solid return. Whillans clearly knows what he is doing, and the fact that Glenridding is still active and was racing as recently as yesterday suggests there is no shortage of confidence that another winning opportunity is out there. Whether Great Yarmouth features in those plans again remains to be seen, but for a horse with just one career win, that track holds a special place in the record books.
