Gibside

The most telling detail about Gibside is its affection for wet ground. On soft or muddy going, the horse has won half its races — two wins from four attempts. This is an unusually high success rate and suggests that conditions matter enormously. Tim Easterby's yard, based in North Yorkshire, clearly knows this about the horse and likely times its runs accordingly. Easterby has sent out 128 winners this season alone, so he runs a large and successful operation, but Gibside appears to be a horse that requires careful placement.

Catterick Bridge has been its hunting ground. Gibside has won two of three races there, including a victory nine months ago on 28 October 2025. That's an impressive record at one track — better than four wins in five — which means there may be something about the course that suits it. More recently, in May this year, it won a top-level Class 2 race at Chester, showing it can compete at the highest levels when the conditions and race type align. Duran Fentiman, the jockey who partners it most often, has won three races from twenty-two on Gibside, a 14 per cent win rate that mirrors the horse's overall record. The pair seem to get on well enough, though there is no suggestion they are a particularly special combination.

Right now, Gibside is in a lean spell. It has not won in its last six races, with the most recent outing just a day ago finishing third. At seven years old and with fifty races under its belt, this is a seasoned campaigner that may be showing signs of wear, or it could simply be waiting for the right race and the right ground. For a horse that thrives on soft going and loves Catterick, the next rain might matter more than the quality of the opposition.
