Gennadius

That single win came at Chelmsford on 15 January 2026, over a distance of around a mile and a furlong to a mile and two furlongs — the range where Gennadius has always looked most at home. Over those distances, the record reads one win from nine races, which works out at roughly one in every nine, and that is where the profile of the horse starts to make sense. It is not a sprinter, it needs a bit of room to stretch out, and when the conditions have suited, it has delivered.

The challenge is that Gennadius has not won since that January day, and the last six races have brought finishes of 7th, 9th, 9th, 4th, 2nd and 6th — reading those in reverse, there was a near-miss in second place that suggested a return to form, but it has not materialised. The jockey most associated with the horse is Joe Leavy, who has ridden Gennadius eight times without a win between them. That is not necessarily a criticism of either horse or rider — plenty of partnerships have lean spells — but it is a fact worth noting.

What gives Gennadius some useful context is the yard behind it. Richard Hannon has sent out 115 winners this season, which is the output of a genuinely busy and well-organised operation. Horses from Herridge tend to be prepared properly, which means when Gennadius lines up, it is not there to make up the numbers. It competes almost exclusively at Class 5 level — one step up from the bottom of the racing ladder — and has won one from 17 races at that grade. Modest numbers, but this is a horse that has raced just yesterday, is clearly fit and active, and at some point over a mile-plus at Chelmsford, the stars may align again.
