Davies herself was refreshingly honest after Genbu's first career win at Wetherby in October 2025, admitting he was "fortunate" that day and still had learning to do. He had been fitted with a tongue-tie for the race and jumped poorly — but earlier at Sedgefield, when he was allowed to lead from the front and race without the tie, he had jumped far better. That kind of self-awareness from a trainer is worth paying attention to. Davies knows exactly what her horse needs: freedom up front, no fuss, and normal ground underfoot.

On that last point, the numbers back her up neatly. On normal ground, Genbu has won 2 of his 12 races — roughly 1 in every 6, which is significantly better than his overall average. At his best distance range of a mile and six furlongs to two miles, he has won 1 from 8, a solid 1-in-8 conversion at a level — Class 4, the bread-and-butter tier of British jump racing — where the competition is honest but beatable. His most recent win came at Uttoxeter in May 2026, just eight weeks ago.

His recent form reads 5-3-3-1-3-10, which is a mixed picture — that tenth-place finish stands out as a bad day — but the four results either side of it show a horse that is regularly placing and occasionally winning. Davies has sent out five winners from her yard this season, which is a modest but productive tally for a smaller operation, and Genbu accounts for two of them. For a horse that was bought cheaply and is still learning his trade, that is a decent return. Keep him on good ground, let him bowl along at the front, and he remains a live contender wherever he turns up.
