Spencer, who trains from Malton in Yorkshire and has sent out 13 winners already this season, puts much of the early struggle down to misjudgment about what kind of race suited his horse. Running G'Emmethegreenlite over five furlongs—a short sprint—was, as Spencer sees it, trainer error. The horse simply isn't built for that distance. When he ran over six furlongs at Thirsk a couple of weeks ago, things clicked into place. Spencer now believes the horse is a seven-furlong to mile runner, a big, heavy animal that was mistaken for a sprinter. With a mark established and a clearer sense of where he belongs on the track, Spencer has his eye on one of the nurseries at York—a significant step up in the calendar.
The trainer's conviction matters here: he doesn't see a horse that can't win, but one that has been misunderstood. That's a meaningful distinction. G'Emmethegreenlite is still young, still finding his feet, and still has plenty of racing ahead. If Spencer's read is right, the horse's record will look very different by the end of the season.
