Fugitif

The headline achievement is hard to argue with. On 16 December 2023, Fugitif won a Class 1 race at Cheltenham — one of the most prestigious prizes British racing has to offer, at the sport's most celebrated venue. That is the sort of day that defines a horse's legacy, and it sits at the top of a CV that also includes a Class 2 win at Chepstow on Boxing Day 2022 and a first career win at Worcester back in November 2021. Three very different venues, three different moments — a horse that has genuinely earned its place at the table.

The conditions matter a great deal with Fugitif. On wet or muddy ground, his record sharpens considerably: 3 wins from 12 races, or 1 in every 4. That is comfortably twice his overall win rate, and it is the kind of stat that makes any savvy observer check the weather forecast before writing him off. Strip away those conditions and he becomes a much harder horse to back with confidence.

What makes the current spell harder to watch is that he has not won in his last six races, with a pulled-up finish among them, and his most recent win — that Cheltenham Class 1 — now sits 28 months in the past. He has spent most of his career competing at the top level, Class 1 races, where he has won just 1 from 15 (roughly 1 in every 15), so the company he keeps is rarely forgiving. His regular jockey Sean Bowen has yet to find the winning formula on him across 7 races together, though that may say as much about the level they are competing at as anything else.

Trainer Richard Hobson, based at Little Rissington in Gloucestershire, has sent out 9 winners this season — a yard that clearly knows what it is doing. The question for Fugitif now is whether, at 11, he has one more big day left in him when the ground turns soft.
