Fondo Blanco

The curious thing about Fondo Blanco right now is that he seems to have stalled a little. He raced just a day ago, so he is active and still being campaigned by Roger Varian's powerful Newmarket yard—the trainer has already sent out 87 winners this season alone—but his last six races tell a mixed story. Two placings come near the start of that sequence, but the more recent runs have been less encouraging. He has placed three times in his last six, which shows he remains competitive, but he has not won since that Haydock success eleven months ago.

Distance matters for this horse. Over his preferred range of five to six and a half furlongs, he wins one in every four races—a much stronger 25% win rate than his overall record. At Class 3 level, he has won one from three (a 33% win rate), suggesting he is more reliably dangerous against slightly softer opposition than at the very top. Ray Dawson, his most frequent jockey, has one win from five rides together, a 20% return that hints at a useful partnership, though the sample is small.

At four years old, Fondo Blanco still has time to add to his tally, and the machinery is there: a yard in form, a horse who proves he can win good races, and a clear preference for shorter distances that his trainer understands. What he needs now is to get back to the winner's circle before too long, because horses can drift if they go too long between victories.
