The broader career picture is a tough one. Four wins and 21 places from 55 races, a win rate of around 7%, tells you this is a horse competing at Class 6 level, which is the entry level of British racing, and still finding winners hard to come by. Four of those wins have come in 44 races at that level — roughly 1 in every 11. That is not a horse setting the world alight, but it is a horse that keeps showing up, keeps placing, and occasionally delivers.

Where Foinix does show some genuine quality is when the ground is fast and dry. On that kind of surface, it has won 3 of 15 races — 20%, or 1 in every 5 — which is a striking jump from its overall numbers. Pair that with its preferred trip of a mile and three to four furlongs, where it has won all four of its career races across 22 attempts (18%, or nearly 1 in 5), and you have a horse with a clear profile: get it to Brighton, on fast ground, over a mile and a half, and it becomes a completely different animal.

The current run of form is less encouraging. Foinix has not won in its last six races, with finishes of 7th, 8th, 5th, 7th, 7th, and 3rd working back from yesterday's run. Luke Morris, its most regular jockey with nine rides together, is still waiting for that breakthrough — zero wins from nine attempts is a partnership yet to click. Trained by Jim and Suzi Best out of Lewes in East Sussex — a yard that has sent out 13 winners this season — Foinix remains active and competitive. The template for a win is pretty well established at this point. The question is just whether the right conditions line up again.
