Expressionless

The horse's record elsewhere tells a different story. In typical Class 5 races — the bread-and-butter level where Expressionless usually competes — it wins roughly one in six attempts (2 wins from 12). Over most of its career, that is the ceiling. But occasionally, raceday magic happens. Last October, Expressionless broke through at the highest level in its record, winning a Class 2 race at Nottingham, a result that suggests there is more here than pure handicap mediocrity.

Recent form has been lean. Expressionless has not crossed the line first in its last six races, finishing with a sequence of fifth, third, eighth, fifth, eighth, and third. It raced just a day ago, so the team is keeping it active, hunting for the next opportunity. Kyle Strydom, its most regular rider, has taken two wins from eight races together — a 25% win rate that is notably better than the horse's overall record, suggesting they work well as a partnership. Dylan Cunha's Newmarket yard has been prolific this season with 45 winners, and Expressionless seems to thrive when asked to run between a mile and a quarter and a mile and a half, distances where it has won two of five races. The horse is searching for form again, but history says Nottingham may provide the answer.
