What has followed is genuinely interesting. Edgewell has won 3 of his last 6 races, including a win at Worcester just this week. For a horse whose overall record reads 6 wins from 33 races — roughly 1 in every 5 and a half attempts — that recent burst represents a real upturn in form. The bulk of his career has been spent in Class 5 company, the bread-and-butter level of British racing, where he has won just 2 from 16 races at that grade, or roughly 1 in 8. That tells you he hasn't always been able to impose himself even at that level, which makes the current run all the more striking.

His most regular partner in the saddle has been Ross Chapman, though that partnership has produced just 1 win from 8 races together — 12%, or about 1 in every 8. The horse clearly has more ability at home than he has always shown on the track, something Scholfield flagged when describing him as previously disappointing despite looking the part in training. It is the kind of gap between promise and performance that can make a racehorse endlessly frustrating — and then, when it finally closes, strangely rewarding to follow.

Scholfield's yard has sent out 22 winners already this season, so this is a stable in decent form, and Edgewell is clearly contributing to that tally. At eight years old, racehorses are not supposed to be improving — but Edgewell appears to be doing precisely that. Whether the current form holds or whether this is simply a hot spell from a horse who runs hot and cold, only the next few months will tell. For now, though, he is one of the more entertaining horses to keep an eye on.
