Put it on normal ground over a longer trip — between a mile and six furlongs and two miles — and you get four wins from 15 races, again at 27%. This is a horse that is not a plodder; it has a clear profile, and when the stars align it delivers.

Its best level appears to be Class 4, one step below the top half of the British racing ladder. There it has won twice from just six races — one in three — suggesting it can be genuinely competitive when the race is pitched right. The trainer, Daniel John Howard, has sent out just one winner this season so far, which is a quiet spell for the yard, and that broader context matters: a horse can only be as sharp as the team around it is functioning.

The first win came at Thirsk in May 2023, and the most recent at Musselburgh five months later. Both are tracks in the north of England and Scotland, which hints at where this horse has been campaigned. What happens next is the question. The form lines are poor and the drought is long, but if Howard can find a race on normal ground at a suitable distance, there is a version of Edge Of Darkness that has already proved it can win. Whether that version shows up again is anyone's guess.
