Edge Of Darkness

The problem is that "dried up" is putting it gently. The last win came at Musselburgh on 16 October 2023 — that is 30 months ago — and the recent form makes for uncomfortable reading: finishing 13th, well off the pace, then a gap in the record, then 12th, 9th, 8th, and 12th in the most recent outing. None of those placings suggest a horse on the verge of returning to winning ways. When a horse that once won 1 in every 4 races on normal ground starts finishing in the lower half of the field consistently, something has shifted.

And yet the underlying profile still tells an interesting story. On normal ground, Edge Of Darkness has won 3 of 10 races — that is 30%, which is a genuinely strong record. Over the longer distances, between a mile and six furlongs and two miles, it has won 4 from 13, or 31%. Those are the conditions where this horse is at its best: good ground, a stamina test, room to stretch out. At the Class 4 level — the mid-tier of British racing, competitive without being elite — it has won 2 from 6, which is again a solid ratio. The blueprint for what Edge Of Darkness needs is fairly clear.

Trainer Daniel John Howard has sent out just 1 winner so far this season, so it is not as though the yard is in flying form. But Edge Of Darkness is still active and still turning up, and horses have returned from longer waits than this. The question now is whether the right combination of distance, ground, and class can unlock something that has been missing for two and a half years.
