Ebt's Guard

Those Ascot and Newbury victories in April and August of 2025 were both Class 2 races — among the better races you'll find in Britain outside the very top tier — which tells you something important about the level Ebt's Guard is competing at. This isn't a horse scraping wins in lower-grade affairs. Of the 14 races run at Class 2 level, Ebt's Guard has won 2, which works out at roughly 1 in every 7. That's a decent return at a competitive level, and it explains a career that has earned serious prize money despite the wins being relatively scarce.

The recent form is a little mixed. Six races without a win, and an 18th-place finish buried in there, but the surrounding numbers — a second, a fourth, a fourth — suggest the horse is running respectably rather than struggling badly. Trained by the Lambourn partnership of William Muir and Chris Grassick, whose yard has sent out 20 winners already this season, Ebt's Guard is clearly being kept in good shape and pointed at the right races. The yard knows what it's doing.

Regular jockey Lewis Edmunds has been aboard for 24 of the 35 races — a genuine long-term partnership — and together they've won twice, roughly 1 in every 12 rides. That's a modest return, but context matters: they've been taking on strong fields at a high level throughout. The Ascot win last August, just 11 months ago, is the most recent victory, which means the horse hasn't gone cold or run out of ability. The question, as it always is with a course specialist, is simply whether the next entry card reads Ascot.
