Ebendi

At nine years old, Ebendi is no youngster, and the recent form makes for uncomfortable reading. The last six races have produced finishes of 9th, 7th, 7th, 7th, 7th, and 8th — a pattern so consistent it almost looks deliberate. There is no disgrace in finishing mid-pack, but when a horse settles into that rhythm so reliably, it raises a fair question about whether a breakthrough is realistically coming. Ebendi raced just yesterday, which at least confirms the yard still believes there is a race to be won somewhere.

The partnership with jockey Conor O'Farrell has not cracked the code either — five races together, no wins. And at Class 5, the lowest level of British racing, Ebendi has had every opportunity. Fifteen races at that tier, still without a victory. Class 5 is where horses come to find easier competition, to get their heads in front. The fact that it has not happened here, at this level, is the most telling detail on the entire record.

What keeps a horse like Ebendi in training at nine, with 28 winless races behind it, is one of racing's more human questions. Sometimes it is the hope of finding the right conditions on the right day. Sometimes it is simply that a yard believes there is one more run worth trying. Whatever the reason, Ebendi keeps lining up — and until that changes, so does the question of whether the first win might finally arrive.
