The recent form does not offer much encouragement either. Over the last six races, the finishing positions read 7th, 10th, 9th, 12th, 4th, 4th — and while those two fourth-place finishes are the closest thing to a bright spot, they are still well short of a win. The 12th-place finish in there suggests some days are harder than others. Duke Orsino raced just yesterday, so it is clearly an active and busy horse, but being busy and being competitive are two very different things.
The horse runs at Class 6, which is the lowest tier of British racing — essentially the entry-level category where horses who struggle to win elsewhere are given a chance. Duke Orsino has had five races at that level and is still waiting for a first win. That is the context that makes this record particularly stark: even in the most accessible races available, the breakthrough has not come.
Trainer J R Jenkins, based in Royston in Hertfordshire, has sent out seven winners this season, so the yard clearly knows how to get a horse to the winner's enclosure. The challenge with Duke Orsino is that nothing in its record yet suggests it is about to join that list.
