Dramatic Star

The recent run of form — 6th, 2nd, 4th, 9th, 2nd, 6th reading back from the most recent race — tells a story of a horse that keeps getting close without quite getting there. Two runner-up finishes in that sequence show it is competitive, but something seems to be stopping it from converting. That blank stretch now covers six races, and while placing regularly is better than running badly, in racing terms a horse that was winning Class 2 races and is now collecting minor placings is moving in the wrong direction.

The partnership with jockey Tom Marquand has been a particularly barren one — five races together without a win between them. That is not necessarily anyone's fault, but it is a combination that has yet to click.

What should give the team some optimism is where Dramatic Star calls home. William Haggas is one of the most respected trainers in Britain, based at Newmarket in Suffolk, and his yard has sent out 176 winners already this season — a figure that reflects a genuinely elite operation. Horses stabled there are well placed to find their way back to form. The fact that Dramatic Star competes regularly at Class 2 level — the second tier of British racing — also tells you this is a horse the yard rates. It has won just once from eight attempts at that level, a 12% conversion rate, but the fact it keeps being entered there suggests Haggas believes it belongs in that company.

Last raced 27 days ago and still active, Dramatic Star is a horse at an interesting crossroads — talented enough to win at a high level, but searching for the performance that proves October 2024 was not a one-off.
