Dovey Moon

The horse has a clear preference for Chepstow: both its first-ever win and that Class 2 success came at the same track, and the Welsh course seems to draw something extra out of it. Normal ground conditions are equally important: all four wins have come on a standard surface, going four from six (67%) when conditions suit. Get the trip, the track, and the ground right, and this horse becomes a very different proposition.

Recent form tells a mixed story. In the last six races, Dovey Moon has won twice but also finished 14th in one of those runs, so it is not entirely consistent. The most recent outing was just yesterday, keeping it firmly in the news, and the last win came eight weeks ago at Salisbury. David Evans, the trainer behind the operation, runs a busy and productive yard out of Pandy in Monmouthshire — 37 winners in the current season alone — so Dovey Moon is in capable hands. Jockey Jordan Williams has partnered the horse seven times, winning once together, which is modest, but there are clearly specific conditions under which Dovey Moon thrives rather than a partnership that unlocks it anywhere. Find those conditions, and a horse that looks ordinary on paper can look something quite different on the track.
