Divine Libra

The most recent of those wins came at Chester in May 2024, and it remains the high point of a career that has gone quiet since. Divine Libra has not won in its last six races, with recent finishes of fifth, fifth, fourth, second, eighth, and eighth. That second place is the one to hold onto — it shows the ability is still there somewhere, even if winning has become a rarer thing. At six years old, horses do not dramatically reinvent themselves, but they do not simply vanish either, and this one is still active, having raced just yesterday.

The challenge Divine Libra faces is the level it tends to compete at. Twelve runs in Class 2 races — the upper tier of British racing — have produced zero wins. Not one. That is a hard truth for any horse, but it also explains why Chester matters so much. At that track, something clicks. Whether it is the tight, turning circuit, the crowd, or simply a surface that suits, Chester has consistently brought out the best in this horse in a way that other venues have not.

Charles Hills, who trains the horse from his Lambourn yard — a yard that has sent out 29 winners this season alone — clearly sees Chester as central to Divine Libra's story too. He has spoken about the horse wanting a little give in the ground rather than fast, dry conditions, and pointed to a race at Newmarket where it was beaten by the smallest of margins as evidence the form is still there. The big question now is whether a horse that last won almost two years ago can find its way back to the winner's enclosure, and whether Chester, as it so often has, ends up being the place where it happens.
