Trained by Gordon Elliott at Longwood in Co Meath, Direct Approach is part of a yard in excellent form — Elliott has sent out 210 winners already this season, which speaks to the quality of horses and horsemanship on the place. That context matters: this is not a trainer struggling to get results, so the fact that Direct Approach hasn't won yet suggests the horse may simply be operating at a level where winning is genuinely difficult, or that it needs the right race and conditions to finally get its head in front.

Recent form shows the horse is still actively racing and being given chances. Over its last six outings, it has finished second and third twice each, mixed in with a fifth and a ninth — that inconsistency is the story. It was raced just a day ago and came home fifth, which means the yard believes there is still something to work with here. For an unraced horse in a top trainer's yard, that faith is worth noting, even if the results haven't arrived yet.
