The level he competes at is important context here. Class 6 is the entry level of British racing — these are everyday races for horses who aren't going to trouble the big prizes. Desert Quest has run at that level 18 times and won twice, which is actually pretty much in line with what you'd expect. There's no shame in it; most racehorses in training spend their careers exactly here.

What does stand out, though, is how long it has been since he last won. That victory came at Newcastle on 16 January 2024 — nearly two and a half years ago now — and his last six races have produced finishes of 3rd, 2nd, 3rd, 5th, 4th, and 4th. That sequence is quietly frustrating reading. He is clearly competitive, regularly finishing in the first five, but the win keeps not arriving. The 2nd place in that run is particularly telling — he got close, close enough to almost silence the losing streak, and then didn't.

His regular jockey Rowan Scott has ridden him five times without a win between them, though it would be unfair to read too much into that — the horse simply hasn't won for anyone in a long time. The team behind Desert Quest is trained by Ewan Whillans, operating out of Hawick in the Scottish Borders, and the yard has been in decent nick this season with 28 winners, so it isn't as though the whole operation is struggling.

Desert Quest raced just yesterday, meaning he is very much in active training and presumably being aimed at something soon. Whether that brings a first win since January 2024 remains to be seen, but on recent form, expect another honest, place-threatening effort rather than a comfortable return to the winner's circle.
