At its best, this six-year-old was seriously impressive. Both of its career wins came at the highest level it has faced — Class 2 races, which sit right near the top of the British racing ladder — and it won them back to back in the summer and autumn of 2022. First came a victory at York in August, one of the great racecourses in the country, then a win at Newmarket in October. Win two of the most prestigious races you enter, at two of the most famous venues in the sport, and people notice. At distances of seven furlongs to a mile, Desert Order has won two of the three races it has run, a remarkable 67% win rate that suggests those conditions suit it perfectly.
The numbers overall are striking. Five races, two wins, four places across the board — Desert Order has finished in the top three in every single race except one, the seventh-place finish that appears most recently in its record. That is a horse that consistently shows up and competes. A 40% win rate — winning 2 in every 5 races — is the kind of figure that most professionals only dream about.
And then, silence. Desert Order has not raced in 836 days, roughly 27 months, which in horse racing terms is a very long time. The reasons for that absence are unknown, but what matters now is whether whatever made this horse so good in 2022 has been preserved through the layoff. Comebacks after long breaks are never guaranteed, and the most recent run in the form book — that seventh-place finish — was actually the last race before the long absence began, so there is a question mark sitting over what we get on the return.
The horse is trained by Maurice Andrew Ahern, based in Mallow in County Cork, a yard that has sent out two winners already this season. The operation clearly knows what it is doing. If Desert Order comes back anywhere near the level it showed at York and Newmarket, it will be one of the more interesting returners this season — a horse with a proven ability to win the big ones, stepping back into the light after a very long time away.
