The key to understanding Delinquent seems to be the distance. Over a mile and a furlong to a mile and two furlongs, this horse has won 2 of its 3 races — that is two wins from three attempts at those trips, a hit rate that would make most trainers very happy. Stretch it out or bring it back and the results thin out. Get the distance right, and Delinquent looks a different animal entirely.

Both wins have come at tracks with character. The first arrived at Southwell in late April, a course built around a tight fibresand oval that sorts out horses who can settle and switch off. Then came Hamilton Park in mid-May — a sharp, undulating track in Scotland that punishes horses who are wasteful with their energy. Winning at two such different venues in the space of three weeks suggests Delinquent is adaptable and genuine, not just a horse who flukes results on a particular surface.

Behind all of this is trainer Kevin Burke, operating out of Coverham in North Yorkshire. His yard has sent out 145 winners already this season — that is a remarkable volume of success that reflects an operation firing on all cylinders. Horses trained by Burke tend to be well-placed and fit to run, so the fact that Delinquent is coming into this profile just one day after its last race signals that the team are confident in how the horse is holding up. At three years old, with the right distance now clearly identified and a trainer in the form of his life, Delinquent looks like a horse with more to give.
