Delinquent

The recent form tells an interesting story. Reading the last six runs from most recent back — 5-1-6-1-3-5 — you see two wins sandwiched between some quieter efforts. That kind of up-and-down pattern is actually pretty common with young horses still figuring things out, but what stands out is that both wins have come close together: the first at Southwell in late April, the second at Hamilton Park on 15 May. Two wins in under three weeks suggests a horse that has clicked into form at exactly the right moment in the season.

The distance story is the most compelling thing about Delinquent. Over a mile and one furlong to a mile and two furlongs, this horse has won 2 of its 3 races — that's a two-thirds win rate, which is an extraordinary return. Finding the right trip can transform a horse completely, and Delinquent looks like a horse that has found its sweet spot. Put it over shorter or longer and it seems much less effective; get it to that middle distance range and it becomes a different animal entirely.

Behind the scenes, Delinquent is trained by K R Burke at Coverham in North Yorkshire, and the yard is operating at a remarkable level right now — 140 winners already this season. That is not a yard that sends out horses without a plan. Burke has a well-earned reputation for placing young horses shrewdly, and the fact that Delinquent has hit form at the right distance and picked up two wins in quick succession suggests the team knows exactly where this horse belongs.

Still just three years old and clearly in form, Delinquent is worth keeping an eye on over the coming weeks — particularly if it lines up again at that mile-plus trip where it has been so difficult to beat.
