Darkness

The proof came at Goodwood on 23 August 2025, when Darkness finally broke a drought of over a year and won a Class 2 race. That matters, because at Class 2 level—one of Britain's top racing tiers—he has won just once in 23 attempts. This was not a routine victory. The win vindicated O'Meara's long-held conviction that Darkness carries real talent, even if coaxing it out remains a puzzle. The trainer has described him as "a law unto himself" and noted his stubborn streak: he likes to be ridden forward aggressively, but when tactics change he has a mind of his own. That independence can work in his favour—it can also derail entire afternoons.

Ground conditions matter enormously. On fast, dry ground, Darkness is a different prospect entirely: he has won four of his 17 races on such surfaces, a 24 per cent win rate that stands out sharply against his overall average. When the going gets soft or muddy, his record deteriorates markedly. His last six races tell the story of a horse struggling to find the right race and the right conditions. A ninth-place finish was followed by a second, then fourth, third, and two sixths. He raced again just yesterday, so he remains active and in work. At this stage of his career, Darkness has probably peaked as a top-class performer, but those moments when his character aligns with his ability suggest there is still an afternoon to be had, somewhere on a firm track, where it all clicks into place.
