Dark Viper

What makes Dark Viper interesting is how specifically suited he is to certain conditions. He wins roughly one race in every five on normal ground—nothing spectacular on paper, but far better than his overall record of 3 wins from 35 races suggests. More telling still is his form at distances between one mile one furlong and one mile two furlongs, where he has won 3 of his 12 races. Put him on his preferred ground, at his preferred trip, and at Leopardstown, and the horse transforms. His trainer, Mrs John Harrington, who runs a prolific yard based in County Kildare, was candid after his first win: after watching him fail for nineteen attempts, she was beginning to wonder if it would ever happen. But the breakthrough came, and it seems to have unlocked something. His recent form is patchy—a win, then a second, then two mid-field efforts—which suggests he remains a horse who needs things to suit him, rather than a consistent performer. Still, at a yard sending out 53 winners this season, Dark Viper has found a team that understands exactly what he needs. For a horse most would have written off long ago, that is enough.
