His one career win came at Brighton in October 2024, now 20 months ago, and he has not managed to add to it across his last six races, finishing no better than fifth in that spell. At his best distance — seven furlongs to a mile — he wins 1 in every 5 races (one from five), which is a solid number, but converting that potential into actual wins has been the problem. Most of his racing has come at Class 5 level, which is the everyday bread-and-butter end of British racing, and even there he has won just 1 from 11, or roughly 1 in every 11 attempts at that level.
His trainer describes a specific moment at Windsor that sums up the puzzle neatly: Dalmally ran well, was travelling powerfully, hit the front — and then faded when it mattered most, because he had spent too much energy being keen in the early stages. It is a frustrating pattern but not an unusual one. Some horses take time to figure out that racing is not a sprint from the gate. Pattinson clearly believes the penny will drop eventually. The yard has already sent out five winners this season, so they know how to get a horse ready. Whether Dalmally can finally learn to ration his enthusiasm is the question — and given he raced just yesterday, the answer may not be far away.
