What's interesting is that she shows form sprinkled through her recent record. In her last six races she's finished second and third twice each, suggesting she has the ability to run respectably on her day — she's just struggling to get across the line first. Her form at Class 5, the lower reaches of British racing, reads as 1 win from 3 races, which would be genuinely respectable if she could do it consistently. The problem is consistency. Patrick Chamings trains her from Baughurst in Hampshire, and while the yard has had a decent season with nine winners overall, Cuban Lady remains one of its tougher propositions.

Luke Morris has been her regular pilot, and they've struck once in five races together — a 20 per cent win rate, better than her overall 8 per cent, though the sample is small. She raced just a day ago, so she's still very much an active runner, which means the yard haven't given up on her. For a horse with her record, that suggests they see something worth pursuing. She may never be a regular winner, but she's clearly capable of picking off a race at the right level on the right day.
