Something has clicked.

The level Crocus Time operates at is worth understanding. The vast majority of its races have come at Class 6, the entry level of British racing — the equivalent of the local Sunday league rather than the Premier Division. Even there, it has won just 1 from 17 races at that level, a rate of roughly 1 in 17. That is not a horse dominating its grade; it is one that competes honestly and occasionally finds the right day. Which makes the current purple patch all the more striking.

Yet the two victories have come with someone else in the saddle. Whether that is coincidence or something more telling is hard to say with only a handful of rides to go on, but it is not a detail the trainer will be ignoring.

Ron Barr's yard has sent out just one winner this season — and Crocus Time is it. For a small operation, a winner is not just a result, it is a statement. With Crocus Time racing as recently as yesterday and clearly in the form of its life, there is every reason to think this story is not finished yet.
