Crimson Road

Corbett trains out of Otterburn in Northumberland, a small operation that has still managed to send out 14 winners this season. She clearly knows how to place a horse, and Crimson Road's two wins suggest she has worked out exactly what this horse needs: a summer's day and a mile and a half. At 1m3f to 1m4f, Crimson Road has won 2 of 7 races — nearly 1 in 3 — which makes it one of those horses that is genuinely dangerous over the right trip, even if it looks ordinary in the record books.

The last win came at Newbury on 29 August 2024, now nearly 19 months ago. Since then, six races without a win, and recent form of 8-4-6-7-7-5 shows a horse that has been finishing mid-pack or worse. That said, Crimson Road has not been disgraced throughout its career — 6 places from 20 races means it has been in the mix more often than the win tally suggests. It is the kind of horse that fills out a race without dominating it.

Now returning after a break of 111 days — roughly three months off — there is a real question about how sharp it will be first time back. Horses sometimes need a run to find their stride after a long absence, but trainers also sometimes bring one back specifically when conditions are right. If the ground is fast and the distance is a mile and a half or more, Crimson Road becomes worth a second look. If not, its recent form gives little reason for optimism.
