Clover Time

The most striking part of Clover Time's record is how little has changed at Class 6, the entry level of British racing. Seven races at that level, zero wins. That is not a horse being asked to punch above its weight — Class 6 is where horses go to find races they can win. The fact that Clover Time has not managed it yet raises genuine questions about whether a change of approach is needed, whether that means a different type of race, different ground conditions, or simply time and patience.

What keeps the picture from being entirely bleak is the recent trajectory. Two consecutive runner-up finishes suggest Clover Time was finding its feet and getting competitive, but the last four runs have seen it drift back to fifth, sixth, eighth, and ninth — a sequence that points in the wrong direction. Racing just one day ago, it is clearly an active, busy horse in regular work, which matters. Some horses need a high volume of racing to stay sharp; whether Clover Time is one of them remains to be seen.

The yard behind it is worth noting. Michael Appleby, based in Oakham in Rutland, has sent out 71 winners this season — that is a trainer who clearly knows how to place horses to win races. The fact that Clover Time has not yet obliged is unlikely to be down to a lack of skill at the top of the operation. Sometimes a horse simply takes longer to click, and sometimes it never quite does. Clover Time is still only four, which means there is time on its side. But with 15 races already on the clock and the win column still empty, patience in the yard will need to be matched by a change of fortune on the track.
