Classy Al

The real story with Classy Al is Hamilton Park. He has won there twice from nine visits, and his most recent victory came there in July 2025 — making him a genuine course specialist at the Lanarkshire track. Two wins from nine might not sound like much, but horses that return repeatedly to the same course and keep performing are valuable to their yard precisely because everyone knows where to point them. Hamilton is his happy hunting ground, and Jim Goldie's team clearly knows it.

Goldie trains out of Uplawmoor in Lanarkshire and has had 88 winners this season alone, which signals a busy, confident operation. The trainer has an unusually personal connection to this horse — he trained Classy Al's mother and grandmother too, making this something of a family project. That said, he has been candid about the horse's awkward side: Classy Al once dumped jockey Paul Mulrennan on the way to the start, which is not the kind of behaviour that endears a horse to the weighing room. Despite the quirks, Goldie has always maintained the horse has a genuine engine underneath.

Mulrennan is very much the man for this horse. Together they have won 5 of their 23 races — that's nearly 1 in every 5 times they've partnered up (22%), a meaningful figure that suggests the jockey understands the horse's moods well enough to get the best out of him. Classy Al also shows a clear preference for normal ground conditions, winning 6 of his 21 races on a standard surface — nearly 1 in every 3 (29%) — so when the ground is right and Mulrennan is aboard at Hamilton, the combination is worth paying attention to.

His last six runs have been patchy — finishing eighth, fourth, fourth, and then well beaten — but he raced just yesterday and remains active. For a horse of his age and experience, staying in training and still competitive at this level is an achievement in itself. Classy Al is a course specialist with a trusted partner and a trainer who knows his bloodline inside out. On his day, he can still deliver.
