The sweet spot in terms of distance is seven furlongs to a mile, where Classic Encounter has won 2 of 5 races — a 40% win rate that dwarfs anything it has managed over other trips. William Buick, who rode the horse at York, was candid after the race: they got squeezed into a pocket at a crucial moment and couldn't get a clear run. He felt it would have been a very unlucky loser on another day, and he was encouraged enough to suggest the horse could build on it, particularly as it was a first run over that trip.

Recent form reads 3-2-4-1-6-7 from last to most recent, and that win — a first-place finish — sandwiched between some less impressive efforts is a pattern worth watching. Classic Encounter last won at Redcar seven weeks ago, is currently active having raced just yesterday, and with Boughey's yard in full flow and fast ground on the horizon, there may be more to come from a horse that clearly knows its way around one of Britain's northern tracks rather well.
