The five-year-old is trained by George Boughey at Newmarket, and the yard is having a remarkable season — 99 winners and counting, which is the kind of output that marks out a genuinely top-flight training operation. Boughey has spoken about Classic Encounter as a horse whose work at home has always outshone his results on the track, and as being from a family that tends to improve with age. That is an encouraging thought for a horse still only five, and it suggests there may be more to come.
The distance range of seven furlongs to a mile suits him particularly well — he has won 2 of his 3 races over those trips, a remarkable two-thirds success rate that dwarfs his overall record. When Classic Encounter is pitched at the right distance, he becomes a very different proposition. He raced at York recently and jockey William Buick felt hard done by — the horse found himself trapped in traffic at a crucial moment, with nothing moving in front of him. Buick described him as a very unlucky loser and was encouraged by how he handled the trip for the first time, suggesting improvement was there for the taking.
He has since delivered exactly that. Classic Encounter won at Redcar just last week — his second win at that track, having also opened his account there in April 2025. Finding a course that suits and returning to win on it more than once is the sign of a horse that knows its job. Regular partner Billy Loughnane has ridden him six times without a win between them, so it is worth noting that his best results have come with different riders in the saddle.
Currently racing at Class 4 level — the mid-tier of British racing — he has won just 1 of his 7 races at that grade. But with Boughey's confidence in him growing, fast ground reportedly bringing out his best, and a horse that is still filling into himself at five, Classic Encounter looks like one who could outgrow that level before long.
