Chartwell Jock

Nick Scholfield trains him from a yard at Wilsford-Cum-Lake in Wiltshire, a small operation that has still managed to send out 10 winners this season — no small feat. There is clearly something here that Scholfield believes in. The evidence: he has Chartwell Jock entered for a Triumph Hurdle trial at Cheltenham this Saturday, which, even as a stepping stone rather than a realistic winning pitch, is the kind of entry you make for a horse you rate.

His most recent run came just yesterday, and before that, a fall at Kempton complicated things in a way that had nothing to do with ability. Jockey Daniel Sansom — who has partnered him in 5 of his races without a win between them — reported that Chartwell Jock lost concentration at the hurdle after a horse trained by Harry Derham fell fatally at the last. Sansom felt his horse spotted the stricken animal on the ground and looked at it instead of the jump. It is a strange, sad detail, but it matters: Chartwell Jock was running a respectable race in a juvenile hurdle won by Precious Man, and the fall was circumstantial rather than a sign of weakness.

His best distance range is a mile and one to a mile and two furlongs, where he has won 1 from 3 races — by far his strongest return anywhere in his career. At Class 3 level, the step up in quality has so far produced nothing from four attempts. That tells a story: he is competitive at his right distance but is perhaps still finding his ceiling. Whether Cheltenham sharpens him up or simply gives Scholfield a better read on where this horse belongs, Saturday should be worth watching.
