That single win came at Southwell in January 2024, now 31 months ago, making it feel less like a recent highlight and more like a cherished memory. The distance that day was around a mile and a mile and two furlongs, and that range still looks like the sweet spot — Character Testing has won 1 from 5 races at that trip, a 20% win rate, which is genuinely the best version of this horse and stands out sharply against its overall record. When everything clicks at the right distance, something different emerges.

At five years old, the horse is trained by Mark Walford at Sheriff Hutton in North Yorkshire, a yard that has sent out 35 winners this season and clearly knows how to get a horse ready to run. The most regular jockey is Mr Jack Andrews, who has ridden the horse eight times without a win between them — though given Character Testing's broader record, that is more a reflection of the horse than the rider. The pair have not yet found the combination that unlocks that elusive second victory.

Character Testing competes almost exclusively at Class 5, the bread-and-butter level of British racing, and has won just 1 from 13 races there — roughly 1 in every 13 — which puts the scale of things in perspective. The name, it turns out, is rather fitting. This is a horse that tests the patience of everyone around it, delivers just enough to keep hope alive with all those placings, and raced again just yesterday, still active and still in the mix. Whether that second win is coming or not, Character Testing has made a career out of being genuinely difficult to give up on.
