Cephalus

The broader career picture is a solid one. Ten wins and 14 places from 42 races, a win rate of around 24% — roughly one win in every four races — adds up to a genuinely productive career for a seven-year-old still racing actively. Cephalus ran just yesterday, which tells you this is a horse in regular work, kept busy by trainer Chelsea Banham at her yard in Cowlinge, Suffolk. Banham has sent out eight winners already this season, so there is clear form in the operation, and Cephalus has been a significant contributor to the yard's record over time.

The regular partnership with jockey Tom Queally is worth noting. Six wins from 26 races together — again, roughly one in four — is a relationship that has clearly worked. When a jockey keeps coming back to the same horse over 26 races, it usually means there is a mutual understanding built up over time, a sense of how the horse wants to be ridden.

What complicates the picture slightly is the class level. Most of Cephalus's racing has come in Class 4 races, which sit in the middle tier of British racing, and the record there is just 1 win from 15 attempts — around 7%, or roughly one in every fifteen. That is a significant contrast with the overall win rate, and it suggests this horse performs best when conditions and competition are pitched at the right level rather than stretched. The recent run of six races without a win, finishing no better than sixth in any of them, points to a horse that may be waiting for the right opportunity rather than one that is in decline.

The career started at Chelmsford in December 2021, and four years on, Cephalus is still turning up and competing. The next race at Newcastle, whenever it comes, will be watched with considerable interest.
