At Class 4 level — the bread-and-butter tier of British racing, a step or two below the big occasions — Cephalus has won just 1 of 15 races, roughly 1 in every 15, which suggests this is a horse that needs things set up just right to win. Newcastle, apparently, is where everything clicks.

The partnership with jockey Tom Queally has been the most consistent thread through the career. Six wins from 26 races together works out at roughly 1 in every 4, which mirrors the overall career win rate and suggests Queally knows this horse well. The trainer, Chelsea Banham, operates out of a small yard in Cowlinge, Suffolk, and has sent out six winners this season — modest numbers, but proof the operation is ticking along. The recent form reads 10-9-6-10-1-6 — mostly mid-pack finishes either side of a win. That single "1" in the sequence is Newcastle in October. The pattern is consistent enough to be a story in itself: ordinary away from home, special on Tyneside. With Cephalus still active and racing just yesterday, the question is simply when the yard points it back north.
