The concern is what has happened since York. Her last five runs have produced finishes of fifth, sixth, sixth, fifth, and sixth, which is a consistent level of effort without the end result the team would want. She is clearly competitive enough to find her way into the frame, but converting that into a win has proved elusive since her breakthrough. At three years old there is still time to work through that, and horses of this age can improve in ways that are genuinely hard to predict.
She is trained by Ollie Pears, whose yard at Norton in North Yorkshire has sent out 13 winners this season — a healthy return that suggests a well-run operation with horses in good form. Pears knows the northern tracks well, and having already found the key to unlocking Carnation Queen once at York, there is every reason to think he understands what she needs. Whether she can rediscover that spark is the question worth watching.
