From 13 races, Captain Bruce has won 2 and placed on 2 other occasions, a win rate of roughly 1 in every 6 or 7 races — modest on paper, but the context matters. Both wins came at the lowest tier of racing, Class 6, where he has an impressive record of winning 2 from just 4 races — that's 50%, meaning he has won half his races at that level. The message is clear: drop him into the right grade and he becomes a different proposition entirely.
His first win came at Chelmsford in August 2025, and then, just a few weeks later, came the result that really told a story. At Newcastle in October, jockey Alex Jary rode him to victory over seven furlongs — and was almost surprised it worked. Speaking afterwards, Jary described Captain Bruce as a "grand little horse" who had taken time to find himself, and admitted he had expected the distance to be a little sharp. That the horse saw it out so well suggested he might be even better over a longer trip. Crook, speaking the day before that Newcastle race, was already thinking ahead, calling him "quite a nice horse in his grade" who would likely want further in time.
The problem is that since October, the wheels have come off a little. Captain Bruce has not won in his last six races, and his finishing positions — sixth, ninth, twelfth, ninth, eighth, eighth — paint a picture of a horse who is competitive without threatening. He clearly operates best on normal ground, winning 2 of his 8 races in those conditions, and prefers a trip of seven furlongs to a mile, where he has won 1 from 3. He raced just yesterday, so he is very much a horse in the thick of his season.
Andrew Crook's yard has sent out just two winners this season in total, and Captain Bruce accounts for both of them. That makes this horse genuinely important to a small operation — not a headline act at a big stable, but a horse that matters. Whether he can rediscover his October form is the question worth watching.
