Calvert

The recent string of results — six races without a win, with a second and a cluster of thirds and fourths mixed in — tells you almost everything. He is competitive. He keeps showing up. He just lacks that final burst to get his head in front, and Roger Teal, who trains him at Lambourn, has said as much: the horse runs a solid race every time, but there is no extra gear to drag him clear. At Class 4 level, where most of his races have been run, he has gone seven times without winning, which suggests the ceiling is real even if the floor is reassuringly solid.

The more interesting story, though, is what happens next. Teal has been open about the plan: Calvert is going to be used across both jumping and Flat racing, a dual-purpose horse who can be pointed at whichever opportunity suits him best. He made his hurdles debut at Huntingdon and finished a promising fourth in what the trainer described as a decent race — not a soft introduction, in other words. At a distance of a mile and three or four furlongs, his record improves to one win from four races, which is a 25% win rate — comfortably his best stretch of form. That is the version of Calvert worth watching. The trainer's yard has sent out 22 winners already this season, so there is form around him; the question is whether a new discipline can unlock something the Flat no longer can.
