That one career win came at Newbury on 17 April 2026, just seven weeks ago, and it appears to have been a long time coming. Trainer Dominic Ffrench Davis, who operates out of Lambourn in Berkshire and has sent out 12 winners already this season, has spoken openly about the kind of conditions this horse needs to show his best — wet, soft ground. On a fast, dry track, Call My Bluff has tended to find life tough. Get the right conditions underfoot and the picture changes entirely. Ffrench Davis noted after one run that the team had simply been waiting for soft ground, knowing the horse would stay two miles and thrive in those conditions. That patience eventually paid off at Newbury.

What makes that win particularly interesting is where it came — at Class 2 level, which sits among the better quality races in Britain. For context, Call My Bluff had gone to the start six times at that level without winning. First time out on suitable ground, he delivered. Jockey J F Egan, who has partnered the horse in five of his 14 races and won on him, clearly has a good understanding of what this horse needs.

There's also a sense that the best may still be ahead. Ffrench Davis has spoken about wanting to run Call My Bluff in the Ascot Stakes — a race he believes would suit the horse perfectly given his course form and stamina over two miles — though again, the ground would need to cooperate. He's also hinted that jumping fences might be in this horse's future, describing him as a lovely, big type who could do well over hurdles or fences in time. For a horse who has taken this long to get off the mark on the flat, that transition could be worth watching. He raced just yesterday, so the yard are clearly keeping him busy while the season is live.
