The horse has a particularly strong affinity for Southwell, where he has won two of his three races there. That kind of course specialist status matters: some horses simply run better on certain tracks, and Caliban has clearly figured out how to handle Southwell's unique surface and layout. His last win came there on 10 March, just over three weeks ago, so his winning form is recent and immediate.
Caliban is trained by Andrew Balding at Kingsclere in Hampshire, one of Britain's most successful yards. Balding's team has already sent out 204 winners this season alone, so Caliban is surrounded by racing expertise and experience. The horse's breakthrough came on 19 January at Kempton Park, where he secured his first career win — and from that point on, he has been climbing. The progression from a debut winner to a current three-race streak suggests a horse still improving and finding his feet at this level. At four years old, with this recent purple patch, Caliban looks genuinely interesting.
