His last win came at Carlisle in October 2024 — now 20 months ago — and the six races since have brought three third-place finishes, two fourths, and an eighth. Frustrating, perhaps, but not a horse in decline. His recent form suggests he is still competing at a decent level; it is just that the wins have dried up. Most of his career has been spent at Class 4 level, one of the mid-tier grades of British racing, where he has won just 1 of 19 races (around 5%). That is modest, but Class 4 is competitive enough that simply placing consistently takes ability.

Trainer Patrick Neville, whose yard in the North Yorkshire village of Coverham has already sent out 28 winners this season, clearly thinks there is more to come from Byron Hill. After a third-place finish on wet ground, Neville noted the conditions were not ideal — Byron Hill prefers faster, drier ground — and flagged that the plan was to find a hurdle race over Christmas when conditions suit, or possibly try the all-weather. The more intriguing detail is what comes next: Neville has indicated Byron Hill could go chasing — switching to the bigger fences — next season. That is a significant step up in challenge, but it is also the kind of move that can reinvigorate a horse at nine, giving him something genuinely new to figure out.

He raced just yesterday, which confirms he is in good health and being kept busy. Byron Hill may never win a race that stops the press, but he is a reliable, hardy competitor, and with a change of discipline potentially on the horizon, his story is not finished yet.
