Bunker Bay

The numbers are honest about where Bunker Bay fits. A win rate of around 1 in every 25 races tells you this is a horse who competes regularly at Class 5, the everyday, bread-and-butter level of British racing, and finds even that level a challenge. Eighteen races at that tier, one win — that is the reality. Still, there are 11 places on the board across 27 outings, which means Bunker Bay is not disgracing itself. It runs, it competes, it finishes near the front often enough to suggest it belongs, just rarely at the very sharp end.

The most comfortable window seems to be at distances between a mile and three and a mile and four furlongs, where it has won 1 from 9 races — that 11% win rate is the best of any distance bracket, and while it still sounds modest, it is meaningfully better than the overall picture. Great Yarmouth, the scene of that solitary win, is presumably a track that suits. The question is whether that combination — the right distance, the right track — can click again.

Micky Hammond trains from Middleham in North Yorkshire and has had a productive season, sending out 25 winners from his yard. Bunker Bay has not been among them. Regular rider Aiden Brookes has partnered the horse six times without a win, and recent form reads 3-6-3-6-2-6 — a sequence that shows flashes of promise, particularly that second-place finish, but also plenty of disappointing sixths. The horse is currently active, having raced just 14 days ago, so the yard are clearly not giving up on finding another moment like that July afternoon at Yarmouth. Whether it comes is another matter entirely.
