Buccabay

The horse has spent most of its career in Class 4 races — the middle tier of competitive events — where it has managed just one win from 16 attempts, a 6% win rate that shows it operates at the upper edge of its comfort zone in those contests. Away from Class 4, Buccabay has fared better, winning four times from 21 races elsewhere. It was trained by Eve Johnson Houghton's yard at Blewbury in Oxfordshire to its first career win at Ascot in July 2022, and the yard has proven prolific this season with 42 winners sent out overall. When ridden by Charles Bishop — its most frequent partner — Buccabay has performed notably better, winning three of 15 races together for a 20% win rate, compared to its overall 14%. That partnership clearly clicks, and finding its way back to the winner's enclosure may depend partly on reuniting with a rider who understands its temperament. Raced just a day ago, Buccabay remains an active and genuine competitor, albeit one whose recent months have tested its supporters' faith.
