In six races at that kind of trip, it has won once and shown enough on other occasions to suggest the extra distance suits its style. Winning 1 in 6 at a specific distance and trip (around 17%) is actually a meaningful signal: some horses genuinely need time and space to get into a rhythm, and the longer the race, the more that suits them.

The recent run of form makes for tougher reading — no wins in the last six races, with finishes of 18th, 10th, 13th, and 14th among them. Those are mid-to-tail-of-the-field efforts, and there is no point dressing that up. What keeps the picture from being entirely flat is that Bruant raced just one day ago, which means it is active and in training, and the team at A.J. Martin's yard in Summerhill, Co. Meath clearly still see something worth running. Martin's yard has sent out 15 winners already this season, so this is not an outfit simply going through the motions.

The wait since that Downpatrick win is now around ten months, which is a long time to be chasing a second career moment. But horses at this level often find their groove gradually, and the long-distance results suggest the right race on the right day could still produce something worth cheering about.
