Break Point

The pattern that emerges from Break Point's record is telling. Over distances between a mile and six furlongs and two miles—the sweet spot for this horse—it wins roughly 1 in every 7 races, compared to 1 in every 16 overall. That's a significant difference and suggests Luke Dace, the trainer based at Billingshurst, has worked out that longer trips suit this runner better. Kempton's longer layout clearly played to Break Point's strengths.

Recent form has been mixed. In the last six races, there was a second place most recently, followed by fourth, fourth, a win, third, and a tenth-place finish—the kind of inconsistency you see in horses that are reliable without being brilliant. There is a puzzle with Joanna Mason, Break Point's most regular jockey with five rides: she has yet to ride the horse to a win. Whether that reflects bad luck, bad timing, or a simple mismatch is impossible to say from the numbers alone, but it is worth noting that the last win at Kempton came without her in the saddle.

Break Point has never won at the top level—it has zero wins from 12 races in Class 6 competition, the lower grade where it mostly races—and this may be as good as it gets. But a horse that can still find the winner's circle two months ago, and that clearly runs better over longer distances, is far from finished. For Dace's yard to keep running it suggests there is something worth backing here, even if the prizes will be small.
