Burke's yard has been in excellent form this season, sending out 138 winners, so Botanical is operating within a genuinely strong training operation. The first win came at Hamilton Park in July 2023, and the York success eleven months later showed clear progression — a horse moving up in class and delivering when it mattered.

The complication is what has happened since. Botanical has not won in its last six races, a run stretching back nearly two years to that York victory in May 2024. The recent form figures — 2-3-5-8-5-4 reading from the most recent backwards — show a horse that keeps finding its way into the frame without quite crossing the line first. Finishing second and third suggests it is still competitive, but something has prevented it from converting. Whether that is the level of competition, bad luck, or simply the natural difficulty of winning races, the fact remains: 23 months is a long gap since that last success.

There is also a ceiling worth noting. When Botanical has stepped up into the very top tier of races — Class 1, the elite level — it has run four times without winning. That is not unusual; most horses never win at that level. But it does suggest that York in May 2024 may represent the high-water mark rather than a stepping stone to something bigger.

Raced just three days ago and still active, Botanical is clearly being kept busy. At six years old and with that Class 2 win already on the record, this is a horse that has already earned its place in racing. The question now is whether it can find a way back to the winner's enclosure — and whether the right race at the right track might finally give it the opportunity to do what it did at York once more.
