The second, and more significant, came at Southwell on 26 November 2025 — a Class 2 race, meaning one of the better contests you will find in Britain outside the very top tier. Winning at that level suggests Betsen is not just a horse that picks up the minor prizes; when the form clicks, it can compete against genuinely decent animals. That Southwell win came about four months ago, and Betsen was back racing just yesterday, so this is a horse very much still in the thick of things.

The recent run of form — placing fourth, fourth, third, fourth, then winning, then finishing seventh — tells you what kind of horse this is: consistent enough to keep turning up in the places, frustrating enough to make you wait for the win. The eight place finishes alongside those two wins are the mark of a horse that competes without always converting, which is exactly the kind of animal that keeps owners and trainers busy and hopeful.

James Ryan has partnered Betsen more than anyone else, riding in 8 of the 23 races together — but the pair are yet to win as a combination, which is one of those curious footnotes that racing throws up.
