Last year was the breakthrough. Four wins, all at Newcastle, all in the same conditions, all over the same distance. It's the sort of consistency that makes a trainer smile — and it's exactly what Mrs Carr's yard built on, having sent out 56 winners this season alone. The last of them came at Newcastle in October 2024, around 20 months ago now.

Since then, Barleybrown has hit a wall. His last six runs read 3rd, 7th, 6th, 6th, 2nd, 8th — no wins, and only one finish that really threatened. The reason isn't hard to find: those four wins last year were noticed, and his official rating has climbed to 66 as a result. In simple terms, he's now asked to compete against better horses than the ones he was beating, and the gap has started to show. His trainer is clear-eyed about it — he'll need to find a bit of improvement this year to justify that new mark.

What makes Barleybrown genuinely interesting is how specific his profile is. On normal ground, at Class 6 level — the entry-level tier of British racing — he's won 4 of 25 races, or roughly 1 in 6. On soft or dry ground, away from Newcastle, in higher company? The numbers fall away sharply. He's a horse with a narrow sweet spot, and the art of placing him well will define whether 2025 brings more wins or more frustration. He raced just yesterday, so the season is already underway. Newcastle, one mile, normal ground: if those three things line up again, he's worth watching.
