The early signs were not especially promising. When trainer Tony Culhane noted back in September 2021 that she had "not shown too much so far", he was being honest — though he also said he liked her and believed she would win races in time. He was right. Her first career win came at Newcastle in January 2022, and she has added four more since, the most recent at Wolverhampton just four months ago in March 2026. For a horse at her level — she races almost exclusively in Class 6, the entry-level tier of British racing — that is a perfectly respectable career. Prize money at this grade is modest, and the horses that fill these fields are often tough, consistent types who earn their keep the hard way.
One thing that does stand out is how she performs when the ground gets soft and waterlogged. On wet or muddy ground she has won 2 of 7 races — a 29% win rate, nearly 1 in 3. That is a dramatic improvement on her overall record and suggests she genuinely relishes those conditions rather than just tolerating them. When the forecast turns grim and the ground cuts up, Balqaa becomes a different proposition.
Jason Hart is her most regular partner in the saddle, and together they have a decent working relationship — 2 wins from 12 races, roughly 1 in 6, which is well above her overall average. That kind of familiarity matters in racing; a jockey who knows a horse's habits can make a real difference. The yard they come from, based in Garstang in Lancashire, has sent out 6 winners already this season, so there is clearly form in the camp.
Her recent runs show a fourth place just four months before that Wolverhampton win, and she raced as recently as yesterday. At eight, she is not getting any younger, but she is clearly still fit, still competitive, and still capable of winning. Balqaa is not a glamour horse — but she is a genuine one.
