Ayr Poet

The horse is trained by Jim Goldie at Uplawmoor in Lanarkshire, part of a yard that has sent out 88 winners already this season — so this is no small operation. Goldie has made no secret of the fact he intends to keep Ayr Poet going, pointing out that his brother was still winning at 12. The family has been good to Goldie: three of the dam's offspring, including Euchen Glen and Sir Chauvelin, have all won under his care. When a trainer talks about a horse in those terms — fourth winner out of the dam, and still counting — you understand why he keeps coming back for more.

The name is fitting. Ayr Poet has won three times at Hamilton Park from 12 visits, which works out at one win every four races — strong numbers for any horse at a specific track. But his record at Ayr itself is what really tells the story. He first won there in August 2022, and his most recent win came at the same course in September 2025, eight months ago. After that win, Goldie said simply: "Ayr Poet knows where the winning post is here." When a trainer says that about a Scottish track, it means the horse has form, confidence, and a nose for the line when it matters.

Conditions matter too. On slightly soft ground — a touch of moisture underfoot, without being heavy — he has won 5 races from just 12 attempts. That is 42%, which is a remarkable number. Nearly one race in two on that kind of surface. He also has a clear preference for distances around a mile and a furlong to a mile and two furlongs, winning 7 of his 29 races at those trips — nearly one in four.

His most recent form reads 9-2-12-1-9-4, with that second place coming just recently. He is still racing, still competing, and according to his trainer, still capable of winning more. For an 11-year-old, that is quite something.
